After crackdown on Hong Kong, overseas communities carry the torch to keep Tiananmen memories alive

As the 35th anniversary of Beijing’s Tiananmen Square crackdown neared, Rowena He, a prominent scholar of that bloody chapter of modern China's history, was busy flying between the United States, Britain and Canada to give a series of talks. Each was aimed at speaking out for those who cannot.

The 1989 crackdown, in which government troops opened fire on student-led pro-democracy protesters, resulting in hundreds, if not thousands, dead, remains a taboo subject in mainland China. In Hong Kong, once a beacon of commemorative freedom, the massive June 4 annual vigil that mourned the victims for decades has vanished, a casualty of the city’s clampdown on dissidents following huge anti-government protests in 2019.

Photos by AP

Subscribe to The Manila Times Channel - https://tmt.ph/YTSubscribe
Visit our website at https://www.manilatimes.net

Follow us:
Facebook - https://tmt.ph/facebook
Instagram - https://tmt.ph/instagram
Twitter - https://tmt.ph/twitter
DailyMotion - https://tmt.ph/dailymotion

Subscribe to our Digital Edition - https://tmt.ph/digital

Check out our Podcasts:
Spotify - https://tmt.ph/spotify
Apple Podcasts - https://tmt.ph/applepodcasts
Amazon Music - https://tmt.ph/amazonmusic
Deezer: https://tmt.ph/deezer
Tune In: https://tmt.ph/tunein

#TheManilaTimes
#worldnews
#Tiananmen
#hongkong

Our choice of clothes helps to define how we think of ourselves and how we think of others.
An outfit can suggest social status, political beliefs, a certain taste in music and even our mood on any given day - there’s always story
behind the clothes we wear.
It’s one of the reasons Harriet Eccleston, whose clothing brand goes by the same name, felt compelled to continue in a family tradition of tailors, drapers and milliners stretching back generations.
“It’s quite a personal thing,” she said. “The garments that you wear are one of the first things that people see about you and I guess (they) interpret your characteristics or your personality through your choice of clothing and that has always interested me - the emotion, the personality that clothes can bring out.”
Working out of her one room workshop in the Albyn Works, a former
factory building in Sheffield’s Kelham Island, Harriet creates
womenswear with sustainability and heritage at its core.
From ideation and fabric cutting all the way through to hand stitching buttons and packaging items, Harriet’s head, heart and hands are behind it all.
The finest British cottons and wools are taken and combined with a soft colour palette to create elegant garments with a classic versatility.
Yet the reason Harriet’s creations stand out is beyond their aesthetic.
Examine them more closely and you find storytelling and tradition woven into every piece.
The influence of Harriet’s ancestry is evident throughout her business.
“Fashion is in my blood, their stories are in my heart,” reads her website.
Scattered amid the fabric swatches and sketches on the work surfaces and pin boards of her workshop are black and white photos of a moustachioed man immaculately turned out regardless of the scene he appears in.
The man’s name is E.D. Soulsby and he’s Harriet’s great great
Grandfather.
In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Soulsby, owned and ran a menswear shop in the industrial heartlands of Northumbria.
“It was in the family for generations - everybody mucked in and was part of it.
“My granny spent a lot of time there until she was married and she told me a lot of stories.
“They specialised in quality menswear clothing and the idea was they were pieces that would last.”

The top 30 simple things that make us smile include a kind gesture from a stranger, waking up on a sunny morning – and seeing an elderly couple holding hands.

A study of 2,000 adults found seeing a loved one get good news, receiving a surprise gift and getting a hug also feature on the list.

While others experience the same joy after getting into bed with freshly washed sheets, seeing an old friend and watching a puppy.

But for 46 per cent of people, simply having someone smile at you makes you feel happy, with 65 per cent of adults saying that it improves their mood.

That positive boost lasts for an average of more than 13 minutes, leaving them more likely to be kinder to others (37 per cent), more motivated (19 per cent) or make a bold decision (nine per cent).

Bupa Dental Care [https://www.bupa.co.uk/dental/dental-care] commissioned the research as part of National Smile Month, to highlight the benefits the friendly gesture can have.

However, an experiment saw just 21 per cent of adults return the friendly gesture from a stranger.

During a two-hour period, actress Zara Naeem smiled at 112 different people as they walked past her - with only 24 replying with the same expression.

Psychologist, Jo Hemmings, said: “When we smile, a number of psychological and physiological changes occur that impact both ourselves and those around us.

“Smiling releases endorphins, dopamine and serotonin – hormones which improve our mood and our sense of well-being – and also reduces cortisol, our stress hormone, making us feel less anxious and more relaxed.

“A genuine and spontaneous smile which reaches our eyes – known as the Duchenne smile – can also lower our blood pressure and boost our immune system, by increasing our production of white blood cells.

“Smiles also have a positive effect on those around us, by reinforcing friendship, kindness and social bonding as well as having a contagious effect, creating positivity in those on the receiving end of a smile.”

The research also found the average adult claims to smile at a stranger five times a week – but 16 per cent admit they rarely or never return the gesture.

Of these, a third blame it on simply being lost in their own thoughts and not paying attention to what is happening around them, while 20 per cent put it down to being in a rush.

But 27 per cent avoid smiling at others over fears they will ‘look weird’ and 14 per cent are too embarrassed.

However, when a stranger smiles at them, half of adults feel happy and 32 per cent feel uplifted.

Others feel comforted (11 per cent), ‘warm and fuzzy’ (15 per cent) and confident (11 per cent).

Less than one in 10 felt a negative emotion, such as confused (eight per cent) or sceptical (nine per cent).

Despite this, less than half (48 per cent) always return a smile from a stranger, with 34 per cent of those worried the grin was not meant for them.

While 32 per cent claim to be so surprised by the gesture that they don’t react quick enough.

Zelenskyy in PH to promote peace summit he says China and Russia are trying to undermine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was in the Philippines on Monday in a rare Asian trip to urge regional leaders to attend a Swiss-organized global peace summit on the war in Ukraine that he accuses Russia, with China’s help, of trying to undermine.

Zelenskyy arrived unannounced and under heavy security in Manila late Sunday after speaking over the weekend at the Shangri-La defense forum in Singapore.

He had planned but failed to meet with Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on the sidelines of that annual defense gathering and decided to fly here to personally invite Marcos to attend the summit in Switzerland, two Filipino officials told The Associated Press.

Photos by AP

Subscribe to The Manila Times Channel - https://tmt.ph/YTSubscribe
Visit our website at https://www.manilatimes.net

Follow us:
Facebook - https://tmt.ph/facebook
Instagram - https://tmt.ph/instagram
Twitter - https://tmt.ph/twitter
DailyMotion - https://tmt.ph/dailymotion

Subscribe to our Digital Edition - https://tmt.ph/digital

Check out our Podcasts:
Spotify - https://tmt.ph/spotify
Apple Podcasts - https://tmt.ph/applepodcasts
Amazon Music - https://tmt.ph/amazonmusic
Deezer: https://tmt.ph/deezer
Tune In: https://tmt.ph/tunein

#themanilatimes
#worldnews
#philippines
#zelenskyy
AFTER vanishing off the face of the Earth in 1936, with no clue as to its whereabouts, the one of a kind Bugatti Aerolithe has been rebuilt. The car originally debuted at the Earl’s Court Motor Show in the UK in 1935, but after its disappearance, all trace it ever existed lay in just a few photos and some blueprints of the brake pedal and radiator grill. These limitations didn’t stop classic car fanatic David Grainger and his team at The Guild of Automotive Restorers, who painstakingly rebuilt the lost car on a modified Bugatti Type 57 chassis. Using the blueprint of the radiator grill, David and his team worked out the exact dimensions, to the millimetre, of the car and then proceeded to sculpt the body using magnesium, as was done on the original. The magnesium sheets make the car extremely light and therefore increase its top speed. However, the sheets are by no means cheap, costing David around $3,000 each, of which the Bugatti Aerolithe needed 15 for its rebirth. Recreating the body wasn’t the only challenge. David needed to rebuild, from scratch, the tyres to replicate the white walled Dunlop’s on the original car, as they are no longer in production. David’s team skillfully produced identical replicas of the wheels and the Bugatti Aerolithe now stands exactly as it did before, complete with fixed windows and manual brakes.

Eva Mendes put Hollywood on hold a decade ago to raise a family with Ryan Gosling. Now the 50-year-old actress is reemerging as a cleaning-supplies entrepreneur, and dishes on why doing dishes is her happy place.

To get to this blissful place in her life—where she spends most evenings finding happiness over the kitchen sink in her Southern California home, where she lives with 43-year-old actor Ryan Gosling and their two daughters—took years of hard work, a gene she says she got from her Cuban immigrant mother. From the time Mendes was a little girl, her mom would explain that freedom is when you make your own money.

Since performing in her last movie, 2014’s “Lost River,” Mendes has become a mother, fashion designer, children’s book author and the co-owner of a successful home cleaning goods startup, Skura Style. After taking an ownership stake in 2022, Mendes has helped Skura—which was founded in 2017 by Linda Sawyer and Alison Matz—expand its marketing reach and has even dabbled in product design. Forbes estimates the business brought in $7 million in revenue last year and is on track for $20 million in 2024.

Read the full story on Forbes:
https://www.forbes.com/lifestyle/

0:00 Introduction
0:31 “Freedom is Making Your Own Money”
1:59 Becoming an Actress
3:13 Hollywood: Expectation vs. Reality
5:14 Business Isn’t Personal
6:10 Working With Ryan Gosling
6:41 Eva’s Most Challenging Role
8:10 Taking a Break from Hollywood
10:08 Motherhood is Creativity
11:19 Joining Skura Style
14:01 The Female Founder Space
15:44 What Makes Skura Style Special
18:20 Eva’s Newest Role: Co-Owner
19:26 Eva Mendes X Skura Style Collection
22:00 What’s Next for Skura Style
23:20 Eva’s Legacy

Subscribe to FORBES: https://www.youtube.com/user/Forbes?sub_confirmation=1

Fuel your success with Forbes.
