Genesis has been turning up the heat on BMW and Mercedes for nearly a decade, and now Hyundai’s luxury brand is showing off a crop of futuristic concept cars at the 2024 New York International Auto Show. Forbes Contributor Scotty Reiss (A Girls Guide to Cars) shows off the X Gran Berlinetta and Neolun, and explains the real reason concept cars are so important for brands.<br/><br/>The Genesis X Berlinetta concept is a piping hot orange colored Korean supercar. Created by Genesis for the Vision Gran Turismo series, this sleek coupe is powered by a hybrid V6 powertrain pumping out a total of 1071 hp and 986 lb-ft of torque. For anyone wanting to drive the X Berlinetta (virtually of course), just access Gran Turismo 7, as the car was added to the game in January.<br/><br/>The fully-electric Neolun (meaning “new moon”) is a big, hyper-luxurious SUV concept with a lavish two-row interior with front seats that swivel backward, but it could easily be a three-row machine if it reaches production.<br/><br/>Inside, the Neolun is full of ambitious features, only some of which would make it to a real-world model. Rotating seats and coach doors have been done before on other vehicles, but the radiant heating in the floor and the complete lack of a B-pillar are ambitious indeed. The Macan has been Porsche’s best-selling model for almost a decade now. A sporty crossover that combines both the style and feel of the company’s sports cars with some of the practicality of the bigger Cayenne SUV. But for 2024 there’s a whole new type of Macan.<br/><br/>Calvin Kim, Product Spokesperson for Porsche North America, takes Forbes on a tour of the all-new, fully-electric Macan EV at the 2024 New York International Auto Show.<br/><br/>For Porsche, “performance is luxury,” and the Macan EV will be a scorcher, with 402 or 630 horsepower depending on the model. It will charge quickly thanks to its 800-volt architecture, which the automaker claims can go from 10 to 80% in just 21 minutes on a DC fast charger. Not since the New Beetle debuted in 1998 has Volkswagen dipped so heavily into its iconic past to launch an all-new vehicle. With the new ID. Buzz poised to hit showroom floors later this year, VW Senior Product Planner Ryan Gavin gave Forbes a sneak peek at the 2024 New York International Auto Show. <br/><br/>Between its history-inspired body lines and optional two-tone paint schemes, the ID. Buzz will draw as much attention as modern exotic cars, and not just from aging Deadheads. While its exterior styling borrows heavily from the original VW Microbus, including the oversized “VW” front logo, rear roof pillar air vents, and boxy shape, the interior features an array of modern tech. Dual power-sliding doors and a power rear liftgate feature Volkswagen’s “Easy Open and Close” tech, meaning a simple swipe of your foot beneath the doors will cause them to open (assuming the keys are nearby).<br/><br/>Once inside passengers will find ambient lighting, an optional panoramic sunroof with electrochromic tinting (can go from clear to opaque at the touch of a button), and a standard 12.9-inch central touchscreen featuring wireless App-Connect technology and wireless device charging. Flexibility comes from a removable center console, a sliding second-row seat that also folds down or reclines, a removable third-row seat, and standard features like a heated steering wheel, heated, ventilated and massaging front seats, heated outboard second-row seats, and a nine-speak auto system (a 14-speaker Harman Kardon system is optional).<br/><br/>With its impressive standard equipment list, wide range of interior and exterior design options, and advanced technology, this electric van could have the same impact on Volkswagen’s brand as the 1998 New Beetle, meaning a flood of demand from both traditional and new VW customers, along with a level of cultural impact worthy of the ID.
