One of the last remaining 'Pearly Kings' who was the inspiration behind Del Boy is fighting to keep the Cockney tradition alive - saying there are only around 12 left.

George Major, 86, who was crowned The Pearly King of Peckham more than 65 years ago, said there were once more than 400 like him.

But he says he is now only one of around a dozen left carrying the torch.

He still wears his original pearls with pride to welcome visitors six days a week at the world's only Cockney museum that he set up four years ago.

But he said the younger generation were shying away from the east end Victorian tradition - and it was now in grave danger of dying out for good.

And launching his new campaign to 'save the pearlies' he said it was vital more awareness of its history and meaning was passed down.

George grew up working on the market in the south-London suburb from the age of four and was such a major inspiration behind the classic sitcom Only Fools and Horses he was named “Del Boy the First”.

He recalls being followed at the time by the show's writer John Sullivan while he worked as a costermonger with 'Granddad Fred' and a 'lanky bloke' they called the 'plonker.'

The similarities don't end there - with multiple tales of his exploits being used on the show.

He famously once sold 'Cockney smog' - milk bottles filled with exhaust fumes - to American tourists - that's believed to be the inspiration behind the famous 'Peckham Spring' episode.

He was crowned the Pearly King of Peckham aged 20 - and has been collecting items ever since.

George now spends his days showing visitors around his museum near Epsom, Surrey, and taking his cheerful pearly way to groups, events and nursing homes - but said he was sad schools no longer invited him in for talks.

He said: “In 1930 there were around 400 genuine pearlies but now there are only about a dozen or so of us left.

“The museum helps to keep the Pearly tradition alive by teaching new generations about it.

\

The operating ratio is a financial metric that measures a company's operating expenses as a percentage of its total revenue. It provides insights into the efficiency of a company's operations by indicating how much of its revenue is consumed by operating costs. A lower operating ratio generally indicates better operational efficiency and profitability.

The formula for calculating the operating ratio is as follows:

Operating Ratio
=
Operating Expenses
Total Revenue
×
100
%
Operating Ratio=
Total Revenue
Operating Expenses

×100%

Here's a breakdown of the components:

Operating Expenses: These are the expenses directly related to the company's core business operations, excluding non-operating expenses such as interest and taxes. Operating expenses typically include costs such as cost of goods sold (COGS), selling and administrative expenses, and depreciation.
Total Revenue: This represents the company's total sales or revenue generated from its primary business activities before deducting any expenses.
By dividing operating expenses by total revenue and expressing the result as a percentage, the operating ratio shows the proportion of revenue that is used to cover operating costs. A lower operating ratio indicates that the company is able to generate more revenue relative to its operating expenses, suggesting greater operational efficiency and profitability.

Conversely, a higher operating ratio suggests that a larger portion of the company's revenue is consumed by operating expenses, which may indicate lower profitability and efficiency. However, it's important to interpret the operating ratio in the context of the company's industry, size, and business model, as different industries and companies may have varying levels of operating expenses.

Overall, the operating ratio is a useful measure for assessing a company's operational efficiency and cost management. It is commonly used by investors, analysts, and managers to evaluate a company's financial performance and compare it to industry peers.

The debt ratio, also known as the debt-to-assets ratio, is a financial metric that measures the proportion of a company's assets that are financed with debt. It provides insights into the company's leverage or the extent to which it relies on debt financing to support its operations and investments.

The debt ratio is calculated by dividing the total debt of the company by its total assets and expressing the result as a percentage:

Debt Ratio
=
Total Debt
Total Assets
×
100
%
Debt Ratio=
Total Assets
Total Debt

×100%

Here's a breakdown of the components:

Total Debt: This includes all forms of debt obligations owed by the company, including short-term debt, long-term debt, bonds payable, and other financial liabilities.
Total Assets: This represents all of the company's economic resources, including current assets (such as cash, accounts receivable, and inventory) and non-current assets (such as property, plant, and equipment, investments, and intangible assets).
The debt ratio indicates the percentage of the company's assets that are funded by debt, with higher ratios suggesting higher leverage and greater financial risk. A high debt ratio may indicate that the company has a significant amount of debt relative to its assets, which could increase its vulnerability to economic downturns, interest rate fluctuations, and repayment obligations.

Conversely, a low debt ratio may suggest that the company has a conservative capital structure with a lower risk of financial distress but may also imply lower potential returns on equity. The optimal debt ratio varies depending on factors such as industry norms, business risk, growth prospects, and the company's financial objectives.

Overall, the debt ratio is an important measure of a company's financial health and risk profile, providing valuable insights into its capital structure and financial leverage. It is commonly used by investors, creditors, and analysts to assess the company's ability to meet its debt obligations and manage financial risks effectively.
