Description:
A COMPUTER genius has managed to build a full size remote-controlled Corvette that wouldn’t look out of place in the latest Fast and Furious film. Bjorn Harms decided to pursue his childhood dream by creating a full-scale vehicle that can be manoeuvred with just a small remote. Bjorn grew up watching the Back To The Future movies and was mesmerised by Doc racing around the DeLorean without anyone sitting in the driver’s seat. Wanting to emulate this fascinating scene, Bjorn, a computer technician from Urmond, Netherlands, decided to apply his knowledge and expertise to a 2006 Corvette C6 – and he hasn’t looked back since. Bjorn has also built full-scale remote controlled Knight Rider and Back To The Future replicas.

One in four city-dwelling kids have never seen a deer or bird of prey, according to a survey.

The poll of 1,000 city-based parents and their children aged six to 12 also found 21 per cent of youngsters haven't attempted to climb a tree, while 35 per cent have never slept in a tent.

Others haven't been camping (32 per cent), eaten a meal that was cooked on a camp stove (39 per cent), or gone crabbing in rockpools (41 per cent).

And 39 per cent of city children visit the countryside a maximum of just three times a year.

The research, commissioned by The Camping and Caravanning Club, comes as its new Club president, Hamza Yassin, celebrates National Camping and Caravanning Week by launching a new initiative to provide people with essential wildlife and camping experiences.

Hamza, who took more than 40 first-time campers to the countryside to teach them all about British wildlife, said: “I love going camping, connecting with nature and experiencing wildlife.

“It’s something I believe all children should have the opportunity to do – because let’s face it – they are the future when it comes to protecting our natural world.

“It was great to be able to introduce families to the joy of camping and show how it really puts you on nature’s doorstep – giving them the chance to learn about the incredible outdoors and all the benefits it can bring.”

The study also found 63 per cent of parents whose child has visited a rural area believe their youngster would like to experience it more.

With 46 per cent saying their kids often express an interest in visiting the countryside.

Of those who don’t visit rural areas as much as they would like to, 54 per cent cited ‘lack of time’ as the biggest reason for this.

While 36 per cent find distance the biggest barrier, according to the OnePoll.com data.

Despite this, 55 per cent of all parents claim their child prefers being outdoors rather than indoors – and 31 per cent believe them to be very interested in nature and wildlife.

Sabina Voysey, director general of The Camping and Caravanning Club, which is launching a competition to win camping experiences and equipment [https://www.campingandcaravanningclub.co.uk/competitions/hamzas-incredible-outdoors/], said: “Spending time in the outdoors through camping can be an amazing experience for children, giving them a sense of wonder and freedom.

“It’s a great way to connect with nature, see wildlife up close and learn skills such as map reading, cooking and pitching a tent. It’s beneficial in so many ways.

“The research shows that unfortunately not all children have easy access to the wonderful outdoors for various reasons, which is something we wanted to change through our work with our new president, Hamza.”

The research also found 88 per cent of parents believe it is important for their son or daughter to experience the great outdoors, with 87 per cent wishing they had more outdoor learning opportunities at school.

In little more than 25 years – so the theory goes at least – one-quarter of the country’s electricity needs will come via homegrown nuclear power. Given the chequered history of attempts to bring through new nuclear, reaching that target by 2050 from the current 15 per cent looks ambitious.
But one place central to turning those aspirations into reality is the Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) in South Yorkshire, which sits on land which was once part of Orgreave Colliery.

The facility has been used since 2012 as a base for researchers to test and develop millions of pounds worth of manufacturing innovations for the nuclear industry.

It mostly takes place in a giant open-plan workshop with offices on the top floor which overlook the hive of activity taking place below. It is in these offices where The Yorkshire Post is meeting CEO Andrew Storer.

In the earlier part of his career, Storer, originally from Derby, worked his way up through the ranks at Rolls-Royce to become part of their team tasked with setting up a civil nuclear business.

An initial political push in the early 2010s to find sites around the country for new nuclear power stations – a key factor in the initial establishment of the Nuclear AMRC which had Rolls-Royce as its lead industrial partner – ultimately fizzled out, partly as a consequence of concerns about the 2011 Fukushima nuclear accident in Japan affecting investment decisions.

Storer joined the University of Sheffield-owned Nuclear AMRC in 2015 and was determined to find a viable future for the centre despite the altered political landscape.

It opened up to the nuclear decommissioning market, as well as defence and fusion reactors. The centre also established a supply chain programme called Fit For Nuclear.

Businesses involved in the programme have gone on to win more than £2bn worth of government contracts, safeguarding thousands of jobs.

The centre is also part of the High Value Manufacturing Catapult, a national network of seven specialist industry-focused research centres designed to help turn academic inventions into commercially-viable products.

In early 2022 following meetings with industry figures including Storer, Boris Johnson announced the launch of a new body called Great British Nuclear in a renewed attempt to bring forward projects.

Last week, the Government announced the start of talks with international firms about building a third major new nuclear plant at Wylfa in Anglesey which it is hoped could be similar in scale to also-planned schemes at Sizewell in Suffolk and Hinkley in Somerset. The latter is already under construction but may not open until the early 2030s.

In parallel to the large-scale plans, the UK is also pinning its hopes on what are known as small modular reactors (SMRs) which can be made in factories and involve a cheaper and quicker construction process. It is hoped they could be operational in this country by the mid-2030s.
